Center Opens at Jordan Valley Medical Center
New center provides full range of breast care services,
centrally located, in a warm and comfortable environment
May 24, 2011
WEST JORDAN, Utah – The first center in the Salt Lake area for comprehensive breast care has opened at Jordan Valley Medical Center in West Jordan. The Breast Care Center will provide and/or coordinate a full range of services – such as initial exams, digital mammography, MRI, breast biopsies, stereotactic procedures, brachytherapy, plastic reconstruction, breast-conserving surgery, genetic testing, oncology and cosmetic surgery – all centrally located in a convenient and comfortable environment that supports patients with preventive, diagnostic and treatment services.
A grand opening celebration for the public at the new Breast Care Center will be held Thursday, May 26, at 5:30 p.m.
“Comprehensive breast care services have progressed to mean more than being treated by a surgeon and/or an oncologist once a suspected tumor has been found,” said Bryanie Swilley, CEO, Jordan Valley Medical Center. “Technology and experience have afforded us an opportunity to offer many options in the treatment of breast health issues, but these advancements can be confusing for patients to navigate. By providing a comprehensive breast care center in a single location, we can provide ease of treatment and peace of mind to patients who are facing a maze of outpatient medical services.”
The new Breast Care Center at Jordan Valley Medical Center features the following benefits to patients:
- All services available in one outpatient location, which means faster treatment and less waiting for the patient.
- A more comfortable, less clinical atmosphere.
- Complete range of tests to evaluate breast symptoms or abnormal mammogram results (MRI, ultrasound, stereotactic and other minimally invasive breast biopsies).
- A high level of clinical care, including a nurse navigator assigned to each patient.
- Excellent history for non-cancer patients having yearly mammograms, and a familiar, caring atmosphere should the patient need the expertise of a breast surgeon and/or oncologist.
- Dedicated, experienced physicians on the medical staff and nurses provide counseling and follow-up care.
- Efficient management of high-risk patients with prevention protocols, including more frequent screenings and possible gene testing.
- Support services such as a nutritional counseling, breast cancer support groups and networking.
According to Dr. Jane Porretta – medical director of the Breast Care Center, a member of the medical staff at Jordan Valley Medical Center, and a specialist in breast surgery and ultrasound-guided breast procedures – the Breast Care Center will allow for effective transitions of care between symptoms and treatment.
“Most breast issues are discovered by a family practice physician or OB/GYN,” Dr. Porretta said. “Once a discovery is made, what normally follows is a process of scheduling services through the hospital, waiting for results, scheduling the next step, waiting for results and then making a referral. The Breast Care Center gives physicians the ability to immediately hand over care to an entire team of highly qualified specialists who will take good care of their patients throughout the entire treatment process.”
