Stroke Care

About Us > Quality Care > Stroke Care

Jordan Valley Medical Center has been designated as a stroke receiving center by the Utah Department of Health. This means we have processes in place that allow us to promptly and effectively treat stroke patients. Stroke experts are available 24/7 including Neurologist's, Emergency Room, and Internal Medicine physicians.

In addition, the American Heart Association (AHA) recently honored Jordan Valley Medical Center with the Silver Achievement Award for stroke care. The AHA Get with the Guidelines (GWTG) Stroke program measures a hospital's performance in caring for stroke patients. The categories include the percentage of patients who receive appropriate medication or treatment for stroke as well as smoking cessation counseling during their stay at the hospital.

TPA is the medication given to patients who have experienced a stroke due to a clot. It dissolves the clot that occurs during an ischemic (decreased blood flow to tissues) stroke, allowing blood flow to return to the affected area of the brain. This prevents further damage to the brain tissue. Early recognition and administration of TPA is a major factor in preventing permanent disability due to Stroke.

The administration of antithrombolytic medications (clot busters) help to prevent additional or recurrent Strokes.

Smoking decreases blood flow and can be a causal factor in Strokes and Coronary Artery Disease.
