Da Vinci Surgical Services
At Jordan Valley Medical Center, we believe that “standard” surgical procedures are an opportunity to give our patients an experience that goes far beyond average. Our team strives to meet and exceed patient expectations in every procedure through service, skill, experience, and technology.
While many surgeons still perform hysterectomy, gallbladder surgery, and other procedures with traditional open or laparoscopic techniques, Jordan Valley Medical Center surgeons are leading the way in Utah. Jordan Valley Medical Center is home to one of the few da Vinci systems in the state of Utah. The da Vinci robot provides a superior surgical tool, allowing the surgeon better visualization of anatomy than traditional techniques afford. This level of control is especially important when working around delicate and confined structures like the bladder or reproductive system.
Why Choose da Vinci Surgery?
Potential benefits of da Vinci robot-assisted surgery vary from procedure to procedure, but generally include:
- Shorter hospital stay
- Significantly less pain
- Smaller incisions
- Less blood loss
- Faster recovery
- Faster return to work and normal activities
- In many cases, better clinical outcomes

How the da Vinci Surgical System Works
The da Vinci Surgical System features four arms, one of which has an endoscopic camera that provides a high-definition, magnified 3D view. The other three arms feature different tools that perform the dissections and other actions. These arms are completely controlled by the surgeon, which is why da Vinci procedures are called robot-assisted procedures. Once the robot is docked, the surgeon sits at a control station just a few feet away from the operating table. Using sensitive EndoWrist instruments, the surgeon operates handheld controls that translate his or her motions down to scale. Controls are tremor-resistant, highly responsive, and have a 360-degree range of motion. Physicians must go through special training in order to learn how to operate the da Vinci robot.
